NOUN Kaduna Students Launch Community Projects to Support Orphanage

The Director of the Kaduna Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Andrew Agbon, has commended students for their efforts in initiating community development projects that address practical needs within the centre and extend support to vulnerable members of society. This commendation came during the commissioning of a 64-capacity storage locker constructed by Group B as part of its DES 303 Community Development Project in Kaduna.

The newly constructed locker aims to provide students with a secure place to store their belongings and valuables, thereby addressing issues related to missing items at the centre. Agbon praised the students for their foresight and commitment, noting that the project exemplifies how students can apply their knowledge to solve practical problems within their immediate environment.

He described the initiative as an expression of corporate social responsibility, which promotes cooperation, accountability, and a sense of responsibility at individual, family, and group levels. Agbon expressed confidence that such projects would inspire other students to contribute to the development of both the centre and society at large, while upholding the values of integrity, service, and responsibility.

Speaking on behalf of the students, a representative highlighted the valuable lessons learned in teamwork, cooperation, and community service through the project. He expressed hope that the students would replicate similar gestures in the wider society after completing their studies and thanked the management of NOUN for providing opportunities for learning and personal development.

The event was attended by Hajiya Fatima Yakubu, the Centre’s Head of Administration, and other senior members of staff.

Humanitarian Outreach

In a related development, another group of students conducted a humanitarian outreach to the Sabon Gari Orphanage Home in collaboration with the Kaduna State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development. This group donated essential items, including soap, children’s clothing, and other supplies, as part of their community development initiative, further demonstrating the students’ commitment to supporting vulnerable members of society.
